Are you ready for hurricane season?

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Saturday is the beginning of hurricane season and emergency officials say now is the time to make sure your family is prepared.

Charleston County officials are holding an Emergency Expo Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lowe's in North Charleston.

Management officials from every district in the tri-county area will be there along with fire departments, insurance companies, and government agencies.

The Emergency Expo is not just for hurricanes but for all disasters like earthquakes, fire, and floods.

If you are new to the Charleston area or have never lived through a hurricane, officials encourage you to attend.

"Our goal is for them to have the information they need to sustain their life and their family and protect their property," expo event organizer, Tom Crosby of Lowcountry CERT said.

"What we tell them is protect their property, prepare, and get ready for a hurricane to minimize disaster," he said. "You can't always stop disaster from happening but you can certainly minimize it."

Crosby says the number one question they get at the expo is what to do with pets during a hurricane. Crosby says their advice is to look for pet-friendly hotels along your evacuation route, as not all shelters allow animals.

"We provide a venue for people to come in the area and meet their emergency service providers and learn how to prepare for a hurricane," Crosby said. "Unfortunately, in this area, people are complacent with hurricanes since we haven't had one pretty much since Hugo. They say this is going to be an active year so we want to get the info out to people."

The Emergency Expo is free and open to the public and lunch will be provided.
