Boy is honorary criminal justice academy graduate

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A 7-year-old boy with a brain tumor is now an honorary graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

Richard Culliver on Friday was given honorary certification as a Richland County sheriff's deputy. He went through some of the cadets' courses, including riding in a vehicle during high-speed pursuit training and firing a gun on the range.

In October, Richard was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says he is inspired by Richard and was happy to make him part of his department.

Friday's class was the 600th to graduate from the Columbia academy that trains the state's law enforcement officers.
