Deputies say suspect shot, hit with Taser following car chase

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- Deputies say a suspect was shot Sunday by Charleston County deputies after leading them on a car chase into Georgetown County.

Georgetown County deputies say the chase ended at the Pole Yard Boat Landing. They say Charleston County deputies shot the suspect, who was then airlifted to receive medical assistance.

A Charleston County Sheriff's Office spokesman says the female deputy tried to pull over a U-Haul truck on Highway 17 in McClellanville around 12:23 p.m., but the driver did not stop.  The driver of the U-Haul was driving recklessly, according to the spokesman.

The chase went three miles from Charleston to Georgetown County, according to deputies.

The suspect finally pulled over and ran from the truck. That's when deputies says the suspect was shocked with a Taser and a brief struggle ensued.

Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon says the deputy deployed the Taser twice on the suspect. The suspect was able to escape again and allegedly reached into his pockets. That's when the Sheriff's Office spokesman says the deputy shot at the suspect hitting him in the torso and the arm.

The deputy was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol during investigations involving a shooting.

According to CCSO spokesperson James Brady, the driver has been identified as 52-year-old Rickey Anthony Jennings. He will be charged with Reckless Driving and Failure to Stop for Blue Lights by the CCSO. The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office is charging him with Assault in the First Degree and Resisting Arrest.

Brady says Jennings is still in a Myrtle Beach Hospital in stable and improving condition.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will handle the investigation with assistance from the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.
