Woman charged with murder after argument turns into fatal stabbing

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- North Charleston police responded to a home on Bexley Street for reports of a stabbing Sunday morning.

According to a police report, officers found the victim on the floor of an enclosed porch with a wound to his chest and no pulse.

A witness told police the victim and the suspect,  26-year-old Regina Cherell Carey, had been arguing. The witness also told police Carey had fled the home with three young children.

The victim, identified by the coroner as 45-year-old Tony Cleveland, was taken to MUSC where he was pronounced deceased. The coroner lists his cause of death as a stab wound.

Carey was captured during a traffic stop and the children were found safe.

She is charged with murder and as is usual with murder charges, her bond was denied Monday morning.

According to court records, Carey has a long history of violence. In 2011 she was charged with assault and battery in the third degree. She served 15 days with time served.

In 2010, she was charged with attempted murder but that charge was reduced to assault and battery in the first degree.
