Moultrie Middle, JetBlue partner to send 300 pairs of shoes to OK

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- An eighth grader at Moultrie Middle School in Mount Pleasant found a way to pair her school with an airline to deliver hundreds of pairs of shoes to the victims of a deadly tornado in Moore, Okla.

Addison Ware said she saw the devastation of the tornado on television and decided to act. Through a family friend, she knew that Charleston's JetBlue were offering to ship shoes to Moore after an employee in Oklahoma requested help.

Ware said the idea to include her classmates in the project came while she was digging around in her own closet for like-new shoes.

"That's where the idea came from to ask neighbors and fellow students to bring in good shoes for sending to Moore," Ware said.

After the initial requests went out via email, shoes began arriving at the school.

"Over the few days, we collected over 300 pairs of shoes in all shapes and sizes – some brand new and some slightly worn, but all good gifts to help them out," Ware said.

As is sometimes the case, one good idea opens the door for another.

Other students at Moultrie, Garret Mulvey, Madison Frank and Ethan Clark, thought it would help the tornado victims to add a note of encouragement to the shoes and made origami swans with a message to include with the shoes.

The National Guard Auxiliary received the shoes Monday to be distributed to the victims there.
