Police: Man charged after running over ducks

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Myrtle Beach police say a 72-year-old man is charged with mistreatment of animals after running over a mother duck and her ducklings trying to cross the street.

Police say several cars had stopped for the ducks around 2:45 p.m. Monday when Robert Willard sped up and hit several of the animals at a vacation community.

Authorities say a witness followed Willard's car to his home and called police. Willard was charged with the misdemeanor. A phone listing for him could not be found.

Workers at the vacation community buried the dead ducks and called a wildlife company to pick up the orphaned ducklings who survived.
