MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum welcomed its nine millionth paid visitor Thursday morning.

David Matney and his family are visiting from Bristol TN to vacation in Surfside. The Matneys received a prize pack valued at nearly $2,500.

"When Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum got its start almost forty years ago, we were the first aircraft carrier museum in the nation. Since that time, we have welcomed millions of students, generations of families, and countless veterans," said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette.

Burdette estimates the museum has had a local economic impact of over $700 million over the past 37 years.

It's the impact on history that Matney said he wanted to share with his daughters.

"I want them to understand the history behind it and obviously what our country represents and the freedoms that we have," he said.

Patriots Point presented Matney with a private three-course dinner for two aboard the USS Yorktown, a Charleston Harbor tour for four, a carriage tour for four, and a two-night stay for a family of four plus dinner and breakfast.

Matney also received a voucher for a Carnival Cruise for two people, a helicopter ride at Patriots Point with PeeDee Helicopter, an experience in the Patriots Point Flight Simulator, merchandise from the Patriots Point Ships Store gift shop, and a one year Membership for free future visits to Patriots Point.
