SoCon extends commissioner's contract 3 years

Posted: Updated:

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - The Southern Conference has extended Commissioner John Iamarino's contract three years, a week after the league added three new members to shore up its future.

The conference Thursday announced the deal, which ties Iamarino to the league through 2015-16. The SoCon had been 1 of hardest-hit conferences in terms of expansion with 5 of its 12 members at the start of this season choosing to leave.

However, the conference extended invitations last week to the East Tennessee, Mercer and VMI, all who accepted.

Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Davidson, Elon and Georgia Southern all decided to depart in the past seven months.

Iamarino just completed his seventh year with the Southern Conference.

The contract extension was approved by the league's presidents and chancellors at last week's SoCon meetings.
