COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — The boyfriend of 17-year-old Takevia Shanell Wilson came to her defense Friday night after she was charged in connection with her infant son's death.

"That baby — that was her pride and joy, her everything. She loved him with all her heart and I know she did," said 18-year-old John Benton.

While not the biological father, Benton says he treated Wilson's son as if he were his own. The couple has dated off and on for the past three years.

On June 4, a desperate call to 911 was made from a home on Coolers Dairy Road near the Round O community in Colleton County.

"911, I've a got a baby that's not breathing right now," said the caller to dispatch. "He's (the baby) got a bunch of stuff coming out of his mouth now, a bunch of mucus."

Benton says the couple's nightmare all started when he and his girlfriend left her son on his living room couch while they briefly went into another room.

"We went back in the room for not even 15 minutes when my other brother, Josh, called me and was like, ‘Hey, I don't think the baby is breathing,'" said Benton.

According to Benton, his brother was also in the living room with Wilson's son, sitting in another nearby chair.

"I panicked. I ran in the room with my brother and I was like, 'I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do,'" said Benton. "I started pushing on his stomach and running him in the room and tried to give him CPR."

The sight of her son's lifeless body was too much for his girlfriend to handle, according to Benton.

"When she seen him, she just went crazy. She was all in the yard, rolling in the dirt," he said.

EMS arrived on scene but her son did not make it. Benton says investigators soon began asking questions.

"They showed me some pictures," he said. "He had bruises on his arms and I never seen him like that when I had picked him up. And they said he had a cut on his head or something and had internal bleeding," said Benton.

As for how the baby received those injuries, Benton says that's what he would like to know.

"He wasn't like that when I picked him up. It wasn't like that at all," said Benton.

Deputies eventually arrested Benton's girlfriend, but he says she did nothing wrong.

"Anytime he cried, she was always there, fed him, changed his diaper, always played with him," said Benton. "He was just perfect."

Wilson's bond was set at $50,000.

According to Benton, she's still in jail. Deputies say the case is still under investigation and the exact cause of the baby's death undetermined at this time.
