COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A new lawsuit accuses the South Carolina Department of Social Services of mismanaging a boys' home where an 11-year-old resident was assaulted by an older child.
The lawsuit filed earlier this year also says officials at the Boys Home of the South turned a blind eye to problems they should have known would end up with children being harmed.
The plaintiff says he was sexually assaulted in March 2011 while an adult assigned to his cottage slept in another part of the building.
Boys Home of the South is a nonprofit that contracts with the state to care for boys in the foster system. The group's chief executive officer says his organization complies with all regulations and has its boys' well-being as a top priority.
