CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- College of Charleston's Brian Lanahan, an accomplished teacher and a Fulbright and Woodrow Wilson International Center Scholar, is trying to add yet another title to his name.

The professor is currently preparing to swim 19 nautical miles across the English Channel.

But it is his hopes to raise $10,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America that has many people rooting for him.

"I am raising funds to honor the memory of my mother Mary Ellen Lanahan who died of lymphoma in 2006. I was very close to her and served as a caregiver for the last six months of her life, so this effort is especially meaningful to me," Lanahan explains.

Lanahan has been training with English Channel soloist Kathleen Wilson and Lesley Fanning, a fellow marathon swimmer, for the past two years.

"I have always been captivated by the thought of swimming the Channel," says Lanahan. "I've participated in athletics and made healthy decisions, but in 2010 I had a series of illnesses and made a commitment to getting healthy again through this challenge."

Lanahan says he has been preparing for this intense endeavor for a few years now. He also says that he is very excited about the "prospect of actually getting in the water and attempting the swim."

The water temperatures that Lanahan will be swimming in could range anywhere between 59 to 63 degrees Fahrenheit. The swim could possibly even take the education professor from 10 to 16 hours to finish.

He will begin his swim tide from August 14 to 18. However, the actual time of his swim will depend on the harshness of the tides and weather conditions.
