CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The 16th president of The Citadel, Maj. Gen. James A. Grimsley, Jr., died Monday. He was 91.

He served as president for nine years and was named president emeritus upon retiring.

His memorial service will be Friday, June 14 at 10:00 a.m. in Summerall Chapel.

"Gen. Grimsley was a trailblazer in his time. His tenure at The Citadel was marked by a renewed emphasis on leadership and academic standards. The Citadel is what it is today because of Gen. Grimsley. He will be missed," said Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa.

Grimsley had many accomplishments while serving as President at The Citadel, including the creation of the Citadel Writing Center and the Citadel Inn of Court, the construction of a computer center and gave structure to the graduate faculty. During his tenure, "The U.S. News and World Report" ranked The Citadel as a Top 10 regional institution.

Grimsley's legacy will endure on The Citadel campus at his namesake Grimsley Hall.

He is survived by a wife of 64 years, three children, and seven grandchildren.

"This is a sad day," said Doug Snyder, chairman of the Board of Visitors. "Gen. Grimsley was the consummate Citadel leader, and his impact was far reaching."
