Warmer days mean lots of water for people working in the heat

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Chugging a gallon of water might be the only way for pedi-cab drivers to survive the hot cement of downtown Charleston.

"I think today is the hottest, but there is actually a breeze so it's not too bad," said Jay Jeffers, one of the drivers.

He said today's heat is starting to keep their tourist customer base indoors.

"(There's) not as many as we like, but people have been asking for rides," said Jeffers.

Even the cool treats seem to be taking a back seat to ice cold water.

"It's mostly waters today but Italian ice is always plus, it always keeps you cool," said Logan Williams.

Williams works at Peninsula Treats and had to re-position her Italian ice cart to seek some shade.

"It's not as bad as everybody makes it out to be as long as you keep hydrated. It's not as hot as it would be if you were just standing here without any water or ice," said Williams.

Convincing people to come inside might be the easy part of the job for greeters like Quintin Washington.

"From a mental standpoint I try not to think about it, because I'm used to it. I've been down here for 12 years so I just try not to think about it. Try to keep a sunny attitude," said Washington.
