COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- South Carolina will receive more than $1 million in AmeriCorps grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service, House Assistant Democratic Leader and Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn announced in a release on Friday.

City Year in Columbia will receive $312,000 to fund 24 positions. The program provides tutoring and mentoring to students in third through ninth grades that are at risk of dripping out.

WINGS for Kids will receive two grants. The first is for $201,600 and will fund 57 positions for members who will work with students to decrease disciplinary action and improve school attendance. The second is for $496,647 and will fund 92 positions. That grant will go toward helping implement the WINGS social and emotional learning curriculum, lead activities and facilitate discussions to help children perform better in school.

"As a former teacher and leader of the Neighborhood Youth Corps, I believe strongly in getting young people involved in community service," Congressman Clyburn said.  "These AmeriCorps programs meet local needs and strengthen our communities while teaching the Corps members valuable leadership skills.  I fully support the work of City Year and WINGS for Kids, and congratulate them on winning these grants and providing such extraordinary service to their respective communities."

In addition to the grant money, CNCS will set aside funding to pay for Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards. After completing a full term of service, AmeriCorp members receive an education award of $5,500 to use to pay for college or pay off student loans.

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs.  Its members serve through thousands of nonprofit and faith-based organizations in rural and urban communities throughout the nation.
