Access The Ashley Bike Ride scheduled for Saturday

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Lowcountry bicyclists took advantage of a new state law and biking 6.5 miles across the peninsula in the Access the Ashley Bike Ride on Saturday.

Riders assembled at Brittlebank Park in the area next to the Bristol at 8:30 a.m. and began the ride at 9 a.m.

The state law was changed to allow exceptions for bicyclists and pedestrians on certain controlled-access roadways, such as the James Island Connecter.

Organizers said there is now a bike lane over the Ashley River, but not on the James Island Connecter. They said that the connecter could be made safe for bicycles if the speed limit was lower, better enforced and if appropriate signs were placed up and down the road.
