Firefighters spend time in 1,200-degree temperatures

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Firefighters participating in the South Carolina Survival School "Smoke Diver" class spent time inside of a 1,200-degree container on Saturday.

It's a five-day program that is designed to stress participants to their maximum levels both mentally and physically so they are prepared to handle any situation.

Saturday's training included a flashover simulator. It resembled a metal box and the simulator pulled flames down the side of the container and outside the door. At the top of the container, temperatures can reach between 1,100 and 1,200 degrees.

The South Carolina Survival School began two years ago.
