Report: Charleston garden event means $6 million

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Flowers and antiques mean a lot to the economy of Charleston.

A report compiled by College of Charleston researchers indicates the Historic Charleston Foundation's Spring Festival of Houses and Gardens and the Charleston Antiques Show generated $6.4 million for the local economy. The research indicates that's about a 13 percent increase over last year.

The study found that more than 14,000 people attended the month-long series of events that began in March. It also found that those who attended the events spent about 25% more per visit than the usual Charleston visitor.

It was the 66th annual festival. The antiques show kicked off the first weekend.

Historic Charleston president and CEO Kitty Robinson says the study shows just how important the event is to the Charleston-area economy.
