Citadel lacrosse club coach's assault charges dismissed

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Assault charges against a volunteer Citadel lacrosse coach have been dismissed, according to his attorney.

Attorney David Aylor said that second-degree assault and battery charges against 33-year-old Garett Rosecrans were dismissed because Rosecrans was "merely defending himself."

"At the time of the incident, Waffle House employees told police the victim started the incident and not Rosecrans," Aylor said. "This is a simple case of self-defense that escalated into charges by police."

A witness told police back in April that Rosecrans hit a 44-year-old man because the man was harassing him. The man said Rosecrans hit him about a dozen times.

Rosecrans told police he hit the man in self-defense because he feared for his safety.
