KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Aquarium is releasing a group of endangered sea turtles.
Eight Kemp's ridley sea turtles are being released Tuesday at Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island.
The sea turtles were rehabilitated at the Sea Turtle Hospital at the aquarium in Charleston after they were stunned by the cold off of New England last winter. Sudden cold temperatures lower turtle heart rates and decrease their circulation.
Cold stunning can lead to shock, pneumonia and even death in some cases. Turtles are cold-blooded and depend on the environment to regulate their body temperatures.
