SC man pleads guilty, 1,000 animals needed care

Posted: Updated:

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A 61-year-old Lee County man is getting two years' probation after pleading guilty to four counts of the ill-treatment of 1,000 animals.

The Item of Sumter reported that Robert Stewart was given the sentence Tuesday by Circuit Judge R. Ferrell Cothran.

The judge told Stewart he could no longer care for animals as a condition of sentencing.

Stewart was charged with cruelty to animals after police found dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens and pigeons in deplorable condition at his home.

Police said dogs were crammed into small spaces and cats had skin burns from sitting in piles of their own waste.

Lee County Assistant Public Defender King Cutter said Stewart was disabled in 2005 and he did not mean to harm the animals.
