Mail carrier tries to save girl, 3, from drowning

Posted: Updated:

ANDREWS, S.C. (WCIV) – A postal carrier says he did everything he could to save an unresponsive girl who was found in a backyard pool.

"I wanted to get to that child as quick as I could," said Tim Tyler.

Tyler says he didn't know 3-year-old Sophia Freeman or her family, but being a man of service, it was his instinct to act when he happened to be delivering mail to the house as the tragedy unraveled.

Tyler says the first thing he did was call 911. Then he began CPR.

"Even when I was doing CPR I was doing it because I felt like I had to do something but I really felt like we couldn't bring her back," he said.

Tyler says no one else at the home knew how to do CPR properly. This was second nature for Tyler, as he served with the Johnsonville Rescue Squad for 16 years and Georgetown EMS for about six years.

On Thursday, Andrews Interim Police Chief Verney Cumbee said the drowning is an open investigation. He said investigators are trying to piece together how the child crawled from her home into the next door neighbor's fenced in pool.

He also says DSS is looking into the matter.

In the meantime, the town calls their neighborhood mail man a hero. Tyler has a more modest approach.

"I would feel like a hero if it would have been positive results. If we were able to do something to bring her back," he said.

The post office plans to recognize Tyler for his actions and the staff there also plans to become CPR certified.
