SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) -- The Third Army based in central South Carolina has gotten a new three-star general as its commander.

Lt. Gen. James Terry took over the command Tuesday from Lt. Gen. Vincent Brooks, who is becoming the four-star general in charge of the U.S. Army in the Pacific based in Hawaii. Brooks has been in charge of 3rd Army since 2011.

Terry comes to the post located on Shaw Air Force Base after serving as the V Corps commander in Heidelberg, Germany.

The 57-year-old three-star general says one of his biggest challenges is helping U.S. forces as they withdraw from Afghanistan over the coming months.

Terry takes over forces that are responsible for sustaining U.S. forces in the Central Command area of responsibility, which encompasses 20 nations across the Mideast and western Asia stretching from Egypt to Kazakhstan. Terry also assumes the role of commander of Army forces in that region.

The 3rd Army transferred its headquarters to Shaw in 2011 in a move from Georgia dictated by the 2005 round of Pentagon base closures and realignments.
