CCSD board OKs $383M budget

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston County School District on Monday night approved a $383 million budget for the 2013-14 school year.

The approved budget for the next school year does not include a tax increase.

The budget includes a STEP increase for all teachers and a 1.4 percent COLA increase for all employees in the district. It also includes more money to invest more in early childhood education and partial funding for elementary schools for technology teachers.

The district also elected to increase its funding for large schools to $1.3 million, as well as set aside $200,000 for rural schools.

The board's budget found ways to reduce central office expenditures by $2 million and cut school staff and supply allocations by $750,000. Pool funding was also cut by $300,000 to $1.7 million.

"As we prepare to transition to the common core, which provides a clear and focused progression of learning from Kindergarten to graduation, CCSD is committed to ensuring that educators are equipped with the skills, knowledge and applications needed to produce successful students," said Dr. Lisa N. Herring.

The board also approved the switch for Memminger Elementary into a full International Baccalaureate focused school. That measure passed by an 8-1 vote.

The budget passed by the same margin.
