No tuberculosis found in testing at SC shelter

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- State health officials say no one tested for tuberculosis at a homeless shelter in Myrtle Beach has developed the disease.

But The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported more testing is planned Wednesday.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control said it has tested 183 clients, volunteers and workers at the shelter. Eight people tested positive for the TB germ but none of those has developed the disease.

The germ can be treated with antibiotics and not everyone that has the germ develops the disease.

DHEC spokesman Jim Beasley says officials reviewed 27 chest x-rays and all were free of tuberculosis.

The testing began after a former client tested positive for infectious tuberculosis earlier this month.

More tests were planned Wednesday afternoon.
