BAR OKs 2 new hotels in downtown Charleston

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston's skyline will change, the Board of Architectural Review decided Wednesday night, making room for an 8-story and a 4-story hotel near Marion Square.

The BAR granted construction for an 8-story hotel at 404 King Street, what is now a dilapidated former library situated beside the Embassy Suites.

A 4-story hotel, the Grand Bohemian, has been approved for the space at 249 Meeting Street.

Both buildings have minor changes to make, but owners of both buildings said they are excited to get started on construction.

Michael Bennett, of Bennett Hospitality, the owner of the planned 8-story King Street hotel, said the BAR wanted to see changes to the stucco texture, the elevation of the Hudson Street side of the building and the color of the awning.

He said he considered all of the changes minor and easy to fix.

Day Dantzler, the CEO if the Kessler Collection, the company managing the 249 Meeting Street property, said the company had a history of working on historic properties.

He said there were two buildings currently on the property that would come down to make room for the new 4-story hotel.

Dantzler said the company had met with the BAR five times to get final approval, but he considered the changes -- finishes on the exterior and plans for the rooftop -- to be a "good compromise."

"This building will be built to stand the test of time," he said.
