KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Kiawah Island has 10 miles of beautiful beach, but there are also miles and miles of walking and biking trails. It is a perfect example of how nature and people can coexist.

Deer, birds, and bobcats are just some of the animals that are common on Kiawah Island.

"From the very beginning, Kiawah was created with the wildlife and the environment in mind and throughout the years of development, that philosophy has continued," said Elisabeth King, Director of Outdoor Programs on Kiawah Island.

The island offers 40 nature programs that get people outside to enjoy all the wildlife around them.

"We try to teach them about why it's important not to walk in the dunes, why it's important to leave those sand dollars in the ocean, why it's important to shut off your flashlight for the loggerhead sea turtles. All of that keeps them understanding what Kiawah has to offer but we hope that they take that message home," said King.

At the Nature Center, there are lots of animals that you can see and touch like alligators. With over 500 on the island, you are sure to see several as you are out and about.

But the bottom line is to teach people about conservation.

"Just getting around that message of observing wildlife from a distance, be quiet, be calm, sit down, observe, but don't interfere and getting that message across about not feeding alligators, not getting too close, not fishing near alligators," said King.

And if we continue to respect nature, then we can all continue to enjoy it.

You don't have to vacation on the island to enjoy all the nature tours -- anyone can come check out the nature center for free or go on other paid excursions.
