SC Senate comes back to consider Haley's vetoes

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Senate is halfway through deciding whether to override Gov. Nikki Haley's budget vetoes.

The Senate Thursday overrode 18 of Haley's vetoes, meaning the money returns to the state's $6.7 billion spending plan. Senators sustained 10 of the governor's vetoes to go along with 28 vetoes sustained by the House on Wednesday.

The vetoes overridden by the Senate included saving the South Carolina Arts Commission and the Sea Grant Consortium, which are frequent Haley targets.

Senators did agree with the governor and rejected money by one vote for an organ donor registry and HIV prevention, although any of the votes could be reconsidered.

A two-thirds vote is needed to override the governor's vetoes.
