CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Senator Robert Ford resigned from the South Carolina State Senate on May 31 amid an ethics probe and criminal investigation.

Monday, July 1, at 12 p.m., marked the last day to file for his vacant District 42 Senate seat. Both Republicans and Democrats will be holding primaries for the seat.

There has been much speculation about who will fill Ford's seat. Many thought Democratic State Representative Wendell Gaillard would run but the politician announced on Friday that he will not.

According to the Charleston County Democrats seven people will be running in the primary from their party.

Democratic candidates include Emmanuel Ferguson, Margaret Rush, Herbert Fielding, Maurice Washington, John Edwards, Robert Thompson and Marlon Kimpson.

According to the Associated Press, Billy Shuman is the only GOP candidate to file and two Libertarian candidates are filing, with the candidate being picked at party's Aug. 10 convention.

The last day to register to vote in the special primary election is July 13. The primary election is scheduled to be held on August 13 and if needed a runoff will take place on August 27.

The last day to register to vote in the special general election is August 31. The general election is scheduled to be held on October 1.
