Airmen return to Charleston

Posted: Updated:

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- More than 120 Airmen from the 16th Airlift Squadron from Joint Base Charleston arrived home Tuesday after completing a mission in Southwest Asia.

The airmen wrapped up a 60-day deployment under the 816th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron supporting overseas contingency operations.

"Flying the C-17 Globemaster III, crews flew and supported roughly 1,000 sorties, logged more than 2,500 combat flying hours and airlifted more than 36 million pounds of cargo and more than 4,000 personnel throughout Southwest Asia," said Public Affairs NCOIC SSgt William O'Brien.

Loved ones stood by with flags and flowers to greet the airmen when they landed.

"It's wonderful to get home right before July 4," said Lt. Col. Stewart Newton.

Many of the airmen commented on the unity of the group and the success of the trip.

"We had a great deployment," said Master Sgt. Josh Pogue. "We went out there to accomplish a mission and we did it. It is just great to be back with the family."
