COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Nearly three months after a Walterboro woman was shot and killed as she returned home from the store, five men have been charged in her murder.

"I knew they were going to get them," said Cathy Dewitt. "I know they are doing their job around here. They're trying."

On April 9, Cathy Dewitt's daughter, 34-year old Rebecca Dewitt was shot and killed in her front yard. Deputies say Dewitt had just returned home from the store and was sitting in the car with her three kids when she was hit by a bullet.

"One of them said, 'Mama said it hurt', but then she passed out," Cathy Dewitt said.

Dewitt says her daughter died in her oldest daughter's arms while in route to the hospital.

"What really got to me was the children were right there beside her. It could have got the other three children, too," said Dewitt. "It was like she was an angel covering them and looking out for them."

Charged in the death are Brandon Allen Bowman, Carl Crandell Scriven, Deon Hampton, Jason Charles Wilson and Reginald Shontez Fryar. According to the Colleton County Sheriff's Office, the men were charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime

Several days after the shooting, Colleton County Sheriff R.A. Strickland said that several people had been arrested in connection to the shooting, but at the time, the men were only charged with shooting at each other. Strickland added that two cars had been recovered during the investigation, one of which had been burned and abandoned.

"We have dedicated many man hours and efforts in identifying the individuals responsible for this senseless crime and will be relentless in our efforts to bring them to justice" said Strickland.

On Tuesday, the five men were charged with murder. The new charges are a result of the 14th Circuit Solicitors campaign, "Every Shooter, Every Bullet" where every person involved in a shooting where a person is killed will be charged with murder.

Bond was set at $75,000 for the weapons charge for each man and denied for the murder charge.
