Project Cool Breeze hands out AC units

Posted: Updated:

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Trying to escape the hot, scorching temperatures this summer is hard for everyone, but especially difficult for the Lowcountry's elderly. That's why volunteers with Project Cool Breeze are trying to do their part to help.

For the last 14 years, Project Cool Breeze has distributed thousands of air conditioning units to seniors in need. On Wednesday, the group kicked off their 2013 campaign at the Lowe's Home Improvement Store in West Ashley.

Spearheaded by Representative Wendell Gaillard with the help of Lowes, Project Cool Breeze has made it its mission to reduce the number of heat-related deaths in the Tri-County.

"We have to show our seniors that we care. As you well know in the United States of America we have a lot of senior citizens — the population has grown," Gilliard said. "We always encourage everybody in the state of South Carolina to check on your seniors."

To make the group's cause possible, Project Cool Breeze relies heavily on donations. For more information on how you can help or receive help, just call 843-720-1987.

Volunteers will also distribute air units from 4-8 p.m. at Brittlebank Park on July 20.
