A-Rod, Nunez hitless in second rehab start

CHARLESTON, SC – The Rome Braves ran away with three runs in the top of the tenth inning to take an 8-5 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs Wednesday night in South Atlantic League play at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 7,667 fans.

The RiverDogs are now 6-7 in the second half and 45-36 on the season. They are in fourth place in the Southern Division second half standings. The Braves now move to 41-42 on the season and 5-9 in the second half. They are in last place in the Southern Division second half standings.

Both Alex Rodriguez and Eduardo Nunez made rehab starts with the RiverDogs. Rodriguez, who is recovering from a hip injury, played just three innings Wednesday night in his second rehab game with the RiverDogs. He remains hitless so far as he went 0-2 in his two plate appearances. Nunez played six innings at shortstop and finished 0-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.

It did not take long for Rome to get on the board as Eric Garcia led off the game with his fourth home run of the season over the right-center field wall. The Braves continued their first inning no out rally as Tyler Tewell singled, Casey Kalenkosky reached on an Eduardo Nunez error, and Edison Sanchez walked to load the bases. Tewell then scored on a Carlos Franco fielder's choice. Another fielder's choice by Chris Edmondson then scored Kalenkosky. Franco later came around to score on a Joey Meneses single to left field to stretch the early lead to 4-0.

Charleston cut into the lead with one run in the bottom of the second inning. After walking and advancing to third on an error, Angelo Gumbs scored on a wild pitch.

Edmondson added another run for the Braves in the top of the fourth with his first home run of the year.

RiverDogs starting pitcher Luis Niebla (3-5) was relieved by Derek Varnadore in the sixth inning. In five innings of work, Niebla allowed five runs on six hits, walked two batters, and recorded four strikeouts. He was not a factor in the decision.

In the sixth inning, the RiverDogs pushed another run across the plate. Eduardo Nunez led off the inning with a walk, stole second and later scored on a Gumbs single.

Charleston answered again in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Cito Culver started the inning with a single to left field, went to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a Kelvin DeLeon double. DeLeon later advanced to third on an Aaron Gates single and scored on a wild pitch.

Rome starting pitcher Mauricio Cabrera, who did not surrender a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning, was relieved during the bottom of the seventh by Alex Wilson. Cabrera allowed four runs on five hits, issued four walks, and struck out four batters in six innings of work.

With just six outs remaining in the game and the RiverDogs down a run, Greg Bird blasted his eighth home run of the season over the right field wall to tie the game at five.

In extra innings, Rome quickly seized control of the game. Kalenkosky led off the tenth inning with a walk, advanced to second on a Sanchez walk, and then scored on a Franco single. Sanchez later scored on an Edmondson single to extend the lead to two. A passed ball then allowed Sanchez to score and made the score 8-5.

Shae Simmons shut the door on the RiverDogs in the tenth inning. He pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th inning and picked up his 19th save of the season in 19 tries.

The win went to Zach Jadofsky (5-3) for the Braves. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowed one run on one hit, and struck out four batters.

Adam Smith was tagged with the loss for the RiverDogs. In his two innings of work he allowed one run on one hit, walked three batters, and recorded two strikeouts.
