DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Dorchester Country Sheriff's Department is asking that people avoid the Edisto River over the holiday weekend because it is above flood stage.

In the river's current conditions, currents and undertows are a hazard to swimmers and boaters, deputies said.

Deputies and other local agencies have already performed rescue operations for swimmers and boaters and so far, no one has died. But the current water levels, it would make a water rescue difficult.

Deputies ask that you wait until the water conditions better before going back on the river.

the Edisto River is a popular location for people vacationing or taking a short weekend trip because the river's current usually floats people at a slow speed for several miles.
