Okmulgee Child Struck By Falling Bullet on 4th of July

Posted: Updated:

An Okmulgee toddler was struck by what was initially thought to be debris from 4th of July firework celebrations, but turned out to be a bullet.

According to a news release from Okmulgee Chief of Police Joe Prentice, dispatch received a report of a child being hit by a falling object in the parking lot of a bank near Harmon Stadium.

Emergency responders found a 3-year-old girl with an injury to the top of her left shoulder. Initially, bystanders believed it to be firework debris, but after being transported to the local hospital, a bullet was discovered.

The girl was then transported to a Tulsa hospital for further treatment.

Investigators believe the bullet was most likely fired into the air and possibly far away from where the child was hit.

Investigators are asking for help identifying where the bullet came from. Anyone with any information relevant to the investigation, particularly anyone who witnessed someone firing a gun in the air during last night's fireworks display is asked to contact the Okmulgee Police Department at 918-756-3511.
