'Blockbuster' turnout for Goose Creek Firefighter fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A Charleston community gathered on Saturday and raised more than $1,500 for two firefighters.

It's a little bit of money they hope will go a long way for the families of North Charleston firefighter Darin Kingery and Colleton County firefighter paramedic Jordan Eaddy.

"We came here today, not expecting this. We come here, we didn't know anyone and it's really nice to see how many people come together to support two firefighters they have no clue about," said Kaila Bishop, Eaddy's fiancé.

Eaddy is battling B-cell Lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer.

"The firefighter support team is just amazing and their prayers have really helped us," said Bishop.

North Charleston firefighter Darin Kingery was injured in June when police say a drunken driver ran his car into Kingery and others while he was working the scene a car accident.

"Darin Kingery -- he's a great firefighter; he's an engineer. I worked with Darin a lot," said John DeBoard, a retired North Charleston firefighter. "It doesn't matter if you are in Goose Creek or North Charleston or Charleston, we just want to come out and support this because you just never know."

Jessica Deziel helped to coordinate the vendors and crafters who donated Saturday's sales to Eaddy and Kingery.

"It means a lot that I can help them and give them, even if it's $200 or $300 each. That could be groceries or that can be gas to get to the hospital to see their loved ones," she said.

Deziel said she set a personal goal of about $800 per firefighter but Saturday afternoon during the event she said she expected to surpass that goal.
