Charleston Housing Authority picks up 'green' award

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (WCIV) -- The Charleston Housing Authority was awarded the 2013 Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing Design by the Southeastern Regional Council and the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials.

The group said it selected the Charleston Housing Authority because of CHA's recent construction and renovation of housing units using green technology as a way to conserve energy and protect the environment.

SERC-NAHRO cited the 12-unit complex on Reid Street that was funded by a $3.2 million capital fund recovery grant. During construction, crews added solar panels, tankless water heaters, EnergyStar appliances, low-flow toilets and showerheads as well as green materials to build walkways and parking lots.

Eight of the units at the site were new construction; the remaining four were renovated.

Those four existing units had been honored in 1985 by then-President Ronald Reagan who awarded the Presidential Design Award to the site. The site was also recipients of the NAHRO Merit AWard for Design Excellence in 2012 for the addition of the eight units.

SERC-NAHRO said it is running a 24-month assessment to gauge the effectiveness of the build and the potential of mirroring the technologies in other builds.
