CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The campaign clock is ticking.

The primary election to fill the vacant Senate District 42 seat is still over a month away, but you're running out of time if you want to have a say in who wins.

The last day to register to vote for this special primary election is just five days away on July 13.

Robert ford resigned in May amid an ethics investigation.

His former District 42 Senate seat covers portions of Charleston, North Charleston and Dorchester counties.

The stage is already set for another hotly contested election.

Nearly a dozen people want to take over the State Senate seat long held by Ford.

Candidates running include one Republican, six Democrats and two Libertarians.

The Post and Courier reports that one Democratic candidate, John Edwards, has already dropped out of the race.

Another candidate, Herbert Fielding is holding a press conference Monday at his family's funeral home in North Charleston at 10 a.m.

With only one Republican running, that leaves just a Democratic primary on August 13.

We're told, the Libertarian candidate will be chosen at the party's convention in August.

Election day is October 1.
