CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- There are only five days left to register to vote in the South Carolina Senate election for District 42 to replace long-term politician Robert Ford.

"I do not take the seat for District 42 lightly," said Herbert Fielding, a funeral director who also ran for the House in 1986. "By offering for this office, I am taking on a huge challenge."

If given the chance to serve, Fielding said he wants to put a spotlight on technology and education.

"We need to put more effort into it tying younger students to technical education systems and apprenticeships and job shadowing so they can see the job opportunities that are now available in the area," Fielding said.

Another candidate on the ballot is 28-year-old Emmanuel Ferguson, a solicitor from Charleston and one of the youngest candidates running in the election.

"I didn't want to get into politics. What I wanted to do was give back to the community," said Ferguson. "I'm from right here in Charleston, and every bit of my education came from Charleston."

A third candidate in the race is Marlon Kimpson, an attorney for Motley Rice.

"I think your budget reflects your priority," Kimpson said. "One of my first priorities, on Day One, to look at the legislation and fully fund public education. My next priority is to fight for the Medicaid expansion."

Other candidates in the race are Republican Bill Shuman, Democrats Margaret Rush, Maurice Washington and Bob Thompson, and Libertarians Rodney Travis and Alex Thornton.

A public forum sponsored by the Charleston chapter of the NAACP will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25 in the Burke High School auditorium.

It will allow the candidates to discuss their priorities if elected.

The primary election will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 13 followed by the general election on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

ABC News 4 reached out to all candidates. They were either unavailable to an on-camera interview, sent in a written statement or did not respond.
