Defense contractor laying off hundreds in SC

Posted: Updated:

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (AP) - Hundreds of civilians who work for defense contractor Honeywell in Goose Creek are being laid off.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that at least 320 workers who stock and service equipment for the Army's prepositioned ships will be out of work, likely in September.

The layoffs include mechanics, drivers, computer operators and technicians at the Army Strategic Logistics facility. The ships are ready for rapid response and carry enough equipment and supplies to sustain 20,000 troops for 15 days.

Honeywell notified the workers about a week ago.

The company says the Army is delaying ship maintenance performed by the Goose Creek workers so there is less work at the site.
