TS Chantal weakens heading into Haiti, Cuba

MIAMI (WCIV) -- Tropical Storm Chantal weakened Wednesday as it headed into Haiti and Cuba, the National Hurricane Center reported in an 11 a.m. update.

The result is a storm track that farther west and much less menacing for the Carolina coast.

According to the NHC, Chantal is 335 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica and moving west at 29 mph. The storm's sustained winds dropped to 45 mph in the latest update, down from 65 mph less than a day earlier.

As the storm moves through the Caribbean and Hispaniola, more warnings and watches are being issued ahead of the storm.

The NHC has issued tropical storm warnings for the entire coast of the Dominican Republic, the entire coast of Haiti, the Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas.

A tropical storm watch is currently in effect for the central Bahamas and Jamaica, the NHC said, adding that people in the eastern portion of Cuba should be monitoring Chantal as it moves closer.

The National Hurricane Center warns that rainfall could reach four inches over Hispaniola, central and eastern Cuba, and the southeastern Bahaman islands. Some isolated areas could see 6 inches of rain.
