CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A downtown Charleston restaurant known for its delicious meals was honored with a national award by the National Restaurant Association.

High Cotton was named South Carolina's winner of the 2013 Restaurant Neighbor Award for its philanthropic efforts.

According to a release from the restaurant's parent company, Maverick Southern Kitchen, the staff of High Cotton prepares and serves meals for 200 people on a monthly basis, works on fundraisers for Lowcountry Food Bank and is a contributor to Communities in Schools.

The restaurant's general manager has also set up a scholarship fund in her late husband's name at the Culinary Institute of Charleston at Trident Technical College.

"Dick Elliott, founder and owner of Maverick Southern Kitchens, has inspired me to operate business and my life in ways that benefit the community," Jill Maynard said. "I have learned that giving is more rewarding than taking."

Maverick Souther Kitchens also owns Slightly North of Broad, the Old Village Post House and Charleston Cooks.
