Myrtle Beach considering safety plans for bars

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Myrtle Beach is considering whether new nightclubs will have to submit written safety plans and participate in programs to prevent violence.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that suggestions have been submitted to city council by the local planning commission and the Downtown Redevelopment Corporation.

The council has asked the groups to review whether having large bars along Ocean Boulevard fit in with the family nature of the Grand Strand.

Business owners and others told the two groups that the city should focus on preventing problems throughout the city instead of limiting the types of establishments allowed.

The recommendation suggests the council also lift a moratorium put in place in January that prohibits issuing permits to larger bars along Ocean Boulevard.
