Summerville teen tells police man tried to abduct her

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 15-year-old Summerville girl told police a man tried to abduct her Thursday morning as she walked through her neighborhood.

According to a Dorchester County Sheriff's Office report, the teen said she was walking through the Plum Creek subdivision around 1 a.m. when a man in a truck tried to grab her.

"You never know. This is a great neighborhood. There have never been any problems. I've never heard of any problems in this neighborhood. To have something like this is just unbelievable," said resident Nick Middaugh.

The fun and games stopped two nights ago for Middaugh. He said early Wednesday morning his 15-year-old daughter was outside with a group of friends. That's when her phone rang.

She says she stepped away from her friends to answer and that's when a strange car pulled up next to her.

"At first she thought it was someone that she knew, so she stopped. They opened their door; they said something to her. What she remembers them saying is, 'Shut up.' There was a struggle -- she was grabbed. In that altercation I guess she was elbowed in the face. She had a pretty good bruise to her right eye. She pulled away. She started to scream and she knew that she had to get out of there. Her instinct just took over and she was able to break free and run," said Middaugh.

Middaugh says his daughter is recovering as well as can be expected. He said she did exactly what they practiced with all their kids. He says the most frightening is how close she was to her own front door.

"We live in a cul-de-sac. Her friend was right there. These kids are out here all the time. We knew right were she was; her friends' parents were awake -- they were right there. She just walked right around the corner and that's when it happened," he said. "It was scary."

The Plum Creek Homeowners Association is also handing out flyers to warn others of the attack.

"Don't stop and assume you might know who it is. Just make sure that you have somewhere safe you can run to and make a lot of noise," said Middaugh.

The girl was able to describe the vehicle the suspect was driving. She says it was small, dark, older model pickup truck with an open flat bed. Sheriff's deputies describe the truck as a lowrider.

The girl also says the truck was very loud.

The girl describes the abductor as a white man in his mid-to-late-thirties with dark spiky hair. He was about 6 feet tall, she said.

The report states deputies were not immediately called because the parents in the neighborhood gathered and went searching for the truck.
