COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The former executive director of an association of South Carolina criminal defense lawyers has been accused of stealing nearly $200,000 from that organization.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says 47-year-old Teresa Edmonds turned herself in Thursday on two charges of breach of trust.
Lott says the president of the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers contacted him in March about $192,000 that had gone missing from the organization. Lott says Edmonds took the money between 2004 and this year, spending it on personal items including cellphones, dental work and cosmetic surgery.
Edmonds was being held Thursday in the Richland County jail. It wasn't known if she had a lawyer. In a statement, the attorney association said it was disappointed but declined to comment further.
