Hotel in USC's NCAA problems becoming apartments

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The hotel at the center of South Carolina's NCAA investigation three years ago is transforming into apartments.

The Whitney Hotel was where several South Carolina athletes lived at what the NCAA determined was a reduced rate. The NCAA eventually accepted South Carolina's penalties in the case, which included three years of probation and a fine of $18,500.

The NCAA said South Carolina athletes received $51,000 in impermissible benefits when they stayed at the hotel's two-room suites for less than $15 a night each.

According to Estates Management Company, the building will be rebranded as "700 Woodrow - A Devine Address" and will feature 75 apartments.
