CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- This summer, it seems to be pouring rain one minute and then be dry the next.

At Flowertown Garden Center in Summerville, the weather has taken a noticeable toll on business.

"The weather has been hit or miss for the business because most people do not like to shop when it's pouring rain. However, it's an outdoor business and avid gardeners don't care if it's raining our not," said Charlene Sharkey, one of the managers at Flowertown.

Sharkey said the rain has done wonders for making the plants look lush, but the constant rain has been tough for low-lying backyards.

"This year, we're well above the expected rain fall and it does tend to make people worry a little bit," she said. "But there's not much we can do about the rain other than wait for it to dry out."

It's been a game of start and stop for some gardeners like Diane Alsbeth.

"I thought I left Seattle but it must have followed me or something," she said.

While dodging rain drops, Alsbeth said she's still been able to make trips to Flowertown.

"I got a couple of urns here a few weeks ago with some tall grass. I actually had to go out with a cup the other day and scoop the water because it was just standing water," she said. "So I had to go and scoop it out, because I was afraid it was going to be too much for it."

Sharkey said plants that thrive in the rainy weather, like Papyrus or Blue Mexican Petunias, are selling.

If you're worried about your plants, Sharkey said the best thing you can do is not add water to plants that are already wet.
