Organization aims to raise awareness about epilepsy

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The South Carolina Advocates for Epilepsy met on Saturday to sew caps for patients being tested for the disorder.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that results in seizures. When patients receive EEG tests, doctors attach electrodes to their heads. Members of the organization said the caps they sew help keep the electrodes in place so the results of the test are more accurate.

Members said there are more than 100,000 people in the state that have epilepsy, and their organization is the only one dedicated entirely to helping raise awareness about the disorder.

In addition to the caps, the organization's members aim to educate the community as to the proper steps to take when someone around them has a seizure and to support the families of those who suffer from epilepsy.

The organization holds a business and education meeting on the second Saturday of each month at the Cathedral of Praise off of Ashley Phosphate Road. The meetings last from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. The meeting room is in building A, room 103. These meetings are open to the public.
