New lane closures are in effect as construciton begins on the new I-244 Arkansas River bridge. New lane closures are in effect as construciton begins on the new I-244 Arkansas River bridge.

Construction on the new eastbound Interstate 244 Arkansas River bridge is creating some new lane and exit closures in downtown.

All traffic has been diverted to the newly constructed west bridge.

Through the work zone, you need to think about where you are going and map out your route before you get behind the wheel.

"Very important to follow speed limits, follow the signs and make sure you are giving your full attention to the work zone," said Kenna Carmon, of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

The construction will affect your commute. If you are traveling westbound on I-244, you cannot exit to eastbound Broken Arrow Expressway, Highway 64/51. You will be forced to cross the bridge, heading toward southbound Highway 75.

If you are heading into downtown on eastbound Interstate 244, you won't be able to take the popular 7th Street exit.

If you are on south end of the downtown loop on Westbound Broken Arrow Expressway, you cannot exit to Westbound I-244 toward Oklahoma City.

Officials also say the eastbound I-244 exit will be closed in the future, effectively making the westbound lanes of the Broken Arrow Expressway dead end in downtown temporarily.

The bridge will be completed in the Spring of 2015.
