CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina is marking the 150th anniversary of the attack on Battery Wagner by a regiment comprised of black soldiers with a series of ceremonies.

The anniversary of the charge on Charleston Harbor by the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry is being marked Thursday with prayers, a wreath-laying, candlelight and Civil War music.

Events commemorating the attack continue through Sunday, when a monument to the 54th is unveiled in Charleston

The 1863 attack was part of an unsuccessful attempt by Union forces to capture the city where the Civil War began. But the valor of the troops put an end to the belief held by many that black soldiers couldn't fight. The fight spurred enlistment of thousands more blacks in the Union army.

The attack is chronicled in the movie "Glory."
