Savannah River floods homes in Jasper County

Posted: Updated:

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Flooding along the lower Savannah River has forced more than a dozen Jasper County residents from their homes.

The Island Packet reports heavy rains this summer have sent the river to its highest level in nearly two decades.

Jasper County Emergency Management Director Wilbur Daley said the flooding is happening near Tom Goethe Road in the western part of the county. While the evacuation wasn't mandatory, residents left because it was harder to get to their homes and because of concerns power would be shut off.

The river measured 18.3 feet on Thursday and the riverfront homes flood when the water reaches 14 feet.

The Army Corps of Engineers says weeks of heavy rains have forced them to open dams upstream and cause the flooding.
